Will You Honor Me?

When it comes to our relationship with the Most High, we’re simply not doing enough. We expect favor, grace, and increase from our uSomandla, yet we consistently give Him the scraps — the residue left after we’ve given our best to someone or something else. When we’re in a bind we’re quick to call on Him. When He calls on us, do we yield? We make excuses; we say “the Most High knows my heart.” That is offensive to uSoNINI NaNINI, it is unacceptable, and we must do better.

   Honor Him in obedience.

   To honor the Most High is to heed Him when He calls, to submit to His will, and to follow His laws and commandments. Obedience is not optional; it is a daily requirement, a law and a covenant set for us as His set-apart people. Saul thought that showing up was enough — that doing something in the name of the Most High would make up for his rebellion. uSoNINI NaNINI was not moved by the gesture. He was looking for obedience. How many of us are still offering Him unwanted sacrifices when all He wanted was our submission? We give our time to things He never instructed, while the things He did instruct collect dust.

   And Samuel said, Hath uSoNINI NaNINI as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of uSoNINI NaNINI? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

   Honor Him in humility.

   Pride is the enemy of honor. When we exalt our opinions, our preferences, our way of doing things above His instruction, we are in direct opposition to Him. Humility is not weakness; it is the posture of a submitted people, the acknowledgment that He is sovereign and we are not. Walking humbly isn’t separate from doing justly and loving mercy — it is woven into them. Pride creeps in subtly: “I know what’s best for my life.” “I don’t need correction.” “I’ve been doing this long enough to know.” He resists that posture. The lifting is His to do; our part is the lowering. He looks to the one with a contrite spirit who trembles at His word.

   For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith uSoNINI NaNINI: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

   We cannot bow before the Father and still insist on our own way.

   Honor Him in love.

   Obedience without love becomes religion. Humility without love becomes performance. Love is the foundation that makes everything else sustainable — the reason we obey, the posture from which true humility flows. The greatest commandment was given to our ancestors through Moses long before anything else: love Him with all your heart, all your soul, all your might. All — not the convenient parts, not the parts that cost nothing. And what gives us the ability to love Him this way? He first loved us. He chose us before we chose Him. Love leads to obedience; obedience flows from humility; and all three together constitute the honor He is worthy of.

   And thou shalt love uSoNINI NaNINI thy uSomandla with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

   He is not asking for perfection. He is asking for intention. He is asking for surrender.
