Silence Is Golden: Making Room For the Most High to Speak

Too often we are busy — not just in our schedules, but in our minds. Even when our bodies slow down, our thoughts don’t. The gift of thought has turned into constant noise, and when the mind is noisy it becomes harder to recognize the voice of the Most High — not because He stopped speaking, but because His voice gets buried. Distraction is one of the enemy’s simplest weapons, because distraction eventually leads to sin. So how do we make room again?

1. 01

   Submit yourself to the Most High.

   Listening begins with submission. All paths to uSoNINI NaNINI start with an act of total submission — it is the prerequisite, the entry course everything else is built on. Submitting keeps us aligned with His will, out of unnecessary detriment, away from the snares of the enemy, and on course for His increase and favor. It must be a willful act. When we submit, we position ourselves under His authority and clear ourselves of interference. The meek He will guide; the meek He will teach His way.

   Submit yourselves therefore to uSomandla. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to uSomandla, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

   Step away from distractions.

   Once submitted, we must remove ourselves from everything that pulls us from His presence — put down the devices, still the mind of thoughts that aren’t His, leave rooms and even company that aren’t conducive to hearing His voice. This is part of why we were given the Samba: a day where everything else is paused and our thoughts, focus, and hearts become His. Put down the phone, wait until sundown to make calls, keep the TV off. Many of us grew up with mothers and grandmothers who had a prayer closet — a place they went to battle in the Spirit, and you knew not to disturb their work. Entering that closet meant stepping away from the outside world. It still applies now.

   But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

   Hearkening to the voice of uSoNINI NaNINI requires our intentional discipline.

   Be still and listen for His voice.

   The final step is simple — be still. Not just physically, but mentally and spiritually, because the Most High often speaks in ways that can only be heard when everything else quiets down. Just as you can’t thoroughly diagnose a moving vehicle, He can’t speak to a busy body or a busier mind. Elijah found Him not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, but in a still small voice. More often than not, that is how He speaks to us — a voice we perceive in our minds, one that, if we’re not careful, gets chalked up as just another thought. It usually feels like the one thought that sticks out and briefly makes everything else stop.

   And after the earthquake a fire; but uSoNINI NaNINI was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
